THE drugs' problem in our jails today is widespread, and it is right that prison authorities should be extra vigilant. But the situation facing a Farnworth man on remand in Strangeways seems extreme.
Paul Bainbridge, it is claimed by his girlfriend, lost his open visiting rights after a friend unthinkingly shook his hand. Fear of drugs passing between visitors and prisoners means this action is banned. Now, the young father is not allowed to touch or kiss his two young daughters or his girlfriend, to their great distress.
The fact that Paul Bainbridge is not facing charges relating to drugs, but attempted burglary, makes the restrictions appear even harsher. And his family, especially his children, seem to be penalised for a minor misdemeanour, before his case even reaches court.
