TEENAGE swimming sensation Kelly Walmsley - the youngest recipient of a new heart at Wythenshawe Hospital - will thank the hospital by taking part in a special fund raising event next month.
Kelly, aged 17, a transplant beneficiary when she was only 12 years old, will be part of a team of transplant swimmers who will take to the water in the annual Congleton Swimathon on March 7 and 8.
A total of £60,000 has been raised by the event since it was first started in 1992.
Kelly has become a swimming phenomenon since the life-saving operation, winning a clutch of medals at British and World level in the British Transplant "Olympics" and World Transplant Games.
Kelly, who trains regularly with Wigan Wasps and the Wigan School of Excellence Swimming Club, is also no slouch in the academic field.
She is studying for three A levels and hopes to win a place at Oxford University and to take part in the 1997 World Transplant Games in Sydney, Australia.
The New Heart-New Start appeal run by Wythenshawe Hospital will be one of the major beneficiaries of the Swimathon. Fifteen teams are taking part this year.
