SIR: I wish to reply to the letter by Mark Fissons recently regarding poor support for the Wanderers at the cup match with Luton.
I think the crowds would be larger if the price of admission were reviewed by the board of directors. The current price of a seat in the stand is £15 and £9 concession. In an earlier BEN was a report of the price of seats for the game at the McAlpine Stadium at Huddersfield (an all-seater stadium), the price being £10 and £6 concession. The tickets for the game at Reading in another BEN earlier - £10 and £6 concession. The cost compared to Wanderers is one third less in both cases.
When there are two matches in one week it becomes rather expensive and in a lot of cases a sacrifice has to be made, hence the smaller crowds. The Wanderers are charging Premier league prices for division one games.
In a recent league game at Tranmere, the club tried an experiment. They charged £5 admission, and, surprise, surprise, the size of the crowd doubled, thus creating a much better atmosphere at the game.
Maybe if the Wanderers had done this for the Luton game, they possibly could have had a full house.
The Wanderers have a lot of ardent supporters, who live and breathe the game, celebrate with the club in success and bleed for them in the reverse. Unfortunately, they don't have a bottomless purse. I know I am not alone in this sentiment.
