A BOLTON church has taken the unusual step of issuing a public warning - to stop people being conned by a scheming teenager.

Officials at St Luke's, Chorley Old Road - which operates a wide range of community help schemes - has received several reports of a teenage girl calling at homes in the Chorley Old Road and Halliwell areas asking for money for St Luke's.

The girl - thought to be aged 16 or 17 - even shows unsuspecting householders a St Luke's letterhead. And in some cases, people have been so convinced she is genuine that they have invited her into their homes before handing her money.

Police have been called in and are now investigating.

Jane Matthews, administrator at St Luke's, said people representing the church NEVER collect door to door. And if anyone calls at a house for any other reason on behalf of St Luke's they always have an identification badge.

Anyone who doubts the validity of a doorstep caller can contact Jane on Bolton 843060.
