A COUNCILLOR has issued a health warning to vandals who keep breaking into garages in the Highfield area of Farnworth.
Cllr Carl Dennis says many garages, including those behind his home in Coniston Avenue, are made from asbestos.
And he says vandals who smash panels to break into them are putting their own and other people's health at serious risk.
Yesterday Cllr Dennis discovered that panels on his garage had been removed.
"These people don't know what they are exposing themselves too. Asbestos is safe as long as it is not disturbed. But when vandals break or remove panels the asbestos becomes unstable and there is a risk of exposure to the fibres. Twenty years down the line they may discover to their cost that asbestos has damaged their health."
Cllr Dennis is also concerned about children who use the path near to the garages to take a short cut to Cherry Tree County Primary.
"Asbestos is dangerous and potential intruders should be warned about its potential to kill."
