WALTER Maloney and Jack Turner are very happy in their work, even though they're working themselves out of their present jobs. They are Street Lighting Department gas fitters.

For several months they have been engaged in the massive job of getting rid of the town's remaining gas lamps. Once there were thousands in the streets of Bolton. Now there are only about 500 left, and when the last one disappears, in about a year's time, Walter and Jack will have to switch to other jobs in the department.

GEORGE - does one need to say Formby? - had to ration both himself and his uke last night at the Theatre Royal, otherwise the audience would have had him singing new and old favourites all night. And reacting in his warm-hearted way to a Lancashire audience he might have done so if that would not have meant denying us a supporting bill that is first-rate. Marie Wilson rides a bicycle in a manner guaranteed to give any traffic policeman a head-ache. The Skating Marinos, Mackenzie, Reid and Dorothy (accordionists), Cawalini's dogs and Gaston Palmer (Anglo-French humorist juggler) complete the bill.

MR James Wyld, editor of the Licensed Victuallers' Guardian died on Friday at his residence, the Library Coffee-house, King William-street, Strand. While at his office, he was taken ill, and he was removed to the house of his son-in-law, with whom he resided. It is stated that there had been frequent quarrels between the deceased and his wife, and that the latter followed her husband on the 4th inst. from their residence to his office, where she renewed the abuse which she had commenced in the morning. In the course of the quarrel, it is said she took up a gum bottle which lay on the table and threw it at Mr Wyld, striking him on the temple and rendering him insensible. Mr Wyld was taken home, and he continued very ill from that time until Friday. On Saturday afternoon Inspector Greenfield and Sergeant Burtolie took Mrs Wyld into custody, upon suspicion, and she will be brought before the Magistrates at the Bow-street Police Court today.
