BOLTON doctors are inviting former orthopaedic patients to take part in an event aimed at raising cash and public awareness.
For the first time, the Royal Bolton Hospital is hosting The Great Hip and Knee Walk.
The walk, one mile or less, is one of a number being held across the country by The Wishbone Trust charity to raise funds for research into orthopaedic surgery.
Orthopaedic surgeon Steve Hodgson is the organiser of the Bolton event, which is being held on Sunday, June 1.
He hopes that, as well as raising funds, the walk will be a source of encouragement to those who may be facing such surgery.
"Patients who have had a hip or knee replacement know what a difference these operations can make to their quality of life," he said.
"This walk will not only demonstrate that but help fund research to help others in the future."
More than 150 patients a year have joint replacement operations in Bolton, including the much praised Charnley artificial hip, and the department at the Royal Bolton Hospital has new outpatient clinics, wards and operating theatres at its disposal since the move from Bolton Royal Infirmary last year.
A team of specialists provides a comprehensive orthopaedic service, including joint replacement of the hip, knee, elbow and shoulder.
Walk organisers want to hear from patients who have benefited from major orthopaedic surgery in Bolton and would like to take part in the walk.
They are also keen to hear from families, friends and members of the public who would be willing to take part in the event or offer sponsorship to walkers.
Further details about the walk can be obtained through Steve Hodgson, Clinical Director, Specialist Surgery Directorate at the Royal Bolton Hospital, pphone Bolton 390343.
