SIR: The Tories are, apparently, claiming that their ability to manage the economy gives them an advantage over their political opponents.
It is an instructive exercise to examine the Government's record on housing, a significant living cost for many people.
The Tories' economic policies allowed house prices to rise to unsustainable levels in the 1980s, only to slump back in the 90s, resulting in negative equity and record numbers of re-possessions.
If the housing market is improving, it is too little, too late in many instances.
The Conservative party's competence in this area does appear, like the houses, to be showing a deficit balance.
