SIR: I Cooper of Horwich (April 11) is wholly naive in stating that the Labour Party have no policies and that John Prescott's visit to Bolton was all about balloons and party tricks.
Of course all political parties have policies. The Conservatives have socially divisive ones: the Liberal Democrats have socially irresponsible ones and, in contrast, the Labour Party have policies that offer a sober and pragmatic solution to the problems created by 18 years of Conservative failure.
John Prescott came to Bolton to meet the people. This he did and he was welcomed most warmly. Mr Prescott went door to door and listened attentively to everything the people of Bolton had to say. He cared. Thank God that we still have a man like that in contemporary politics. John Prescott was there in the council estates with us, the people, and I know that John Prescott will be there with us, the people, once again when he takes up his seat in Parliament after the Election. I was impressed with his concern and grasp of the needs of the people of Bolton. I Cooper is indeed wrong to suggest that Mr Prescott's visit to Bolton was all about tricks and gimmicks. John Prescott is a man of integrity and vision and it was great to see him in Bolton.
