EVEN without explicit bedroom scenes, which are taboo for film-makers in the Soviet Union, many Russians are shocked at what they see at the cinema and on television. Close-ups of prolonged kisses and other romantic scenes in a television film led a viewer to write to the trade union daily Trud: 'You watch and feel your cheeks colouring. Such scenes are harmful for juveniles to watch, even after the age of 16, for it is between 18 and 20 that they make their mistakes.' The paper was deluged with letters from others agreeing.

BRITISH authorities place Palestine's 600,000 Jewish population under virtual house arrest today as Dov Gruner and three other Jewish terrorists were hanged at dawn in the courtyard of the grim old Turkish prison at Acre. Meanwhile, a sensation was caused in London today when a powerful home-made bomb, consisting of 26 sticks of gelignite in a brown paper parcel, with signs of the fuses having been ignited, was found in a cloakroom in the Colonial office in Whitehall. Had it exploded, the entire building would have been wrecked.

From the Evening News, April 16, 1872
YESTERDAY morning, as the Snaefell steamer was about to sail from Douglas harbour at five o'clock, a young man and woman made their appearance on the pier with the view of proceeding to Liverpool. The young man had been assisting his father at a small farm, and his companion was the daughter of a neighbouring farmer. The youth was on his way to Australia, there to push his fortune; and the young woman, not liking to be left in the Isle of Man alone, had resolved to share the fortune of her lover. It is supposed they intended to get married on their arrival in Liverpool, but the father of the young woman, having heard of their flight, watched the steamer, and, seeing his daughter, took her off home, leaving the youth to proceed to Liverpool alone. The old man remarked, as he forcibly detained his child, who was crying bitterly, 'I've got charge of you till you are 21 at any rate.'
