BURY'S Tory candidates are split over the European single currency.
David Sumberg, standing in Bury South, is defying Prime Minister John Major and expressing outright opposition to the idea but colleague Alistair Burt, seeking to hang on to Bury North, is behind the Cabinet's "wait and see" compromise.
Mr Sumberg - with a majority of just 788 - said that while he accepted it was sensible for Britain to stay in the talks, he opposed monetary union and would vote against it.
But Mr Burt - majority 4,764 -- is happy with the position and believes a decision must be made when the final details of any single currency have been thrashed out.
