AROUND 20,000 ecstatic fans are expected to line the streets when Wanderers players parade their championship trophy early next month.

Players will greet fans from an open top bus and show off the old Football League Championship trophy during a tour of glory around the town on Monday, May 5.

Wanderers have never before won the trophy which was awarded to the winners of the old First Division for more than 100 years.

In previous years fans gathered on Victoria Square when there was something to celebrate. And many were disappointed when a party on the Town Hall steps was cancelled on police advice.

But Bolton boss Colin Todd said the victory parade would crown a great year.

He added: "Our fans have been marvellous, giving us tremendous support all season.

"They are simply the best. We are looking forward to a great new season in our new stadium."

Bolton Council Leader Bob Howarth said: "Public safety must be paramount and the route through town should give people a chance to get a good view of the team." Chief Supt John Bartlett, of Bolton police, said: "We feel sure this way of celebrating Wanderers' success will be much more enjoyable and safer for everyone."

Players will be joined on the bus by their families, club officials, Mayor of Bolton Cllr Eric Johnson and mascot Lofty the Lion.

The parade will set off at 5pm from the junction of Ivy Road and Chorley Old Road, making its way along St George's Road, Marsden Road, Deansgate, Bradshawgate and down Manchester Road. It will end at Green Lane at about 6.30pm.

There will be a special viewing area for wheelchair users in Bradshawgate, near Nelson Square.
