SIR: Having read the letter from "Puzzled, Bolton", I can tell you that you are not the only one asking what are you supposed to live on.
I know someone self employed who had no job at all and signed on at the Labour Exchange only to be told he could not have any money unless he was sick. There was nothing from Social Security or Income Support and this lasted weeks. This person is 10 years older than you and time served in the building trade.
In cases like this why can't they have a few pounds a week for food only, even if it has to be a giro stamped 'food only' then it can't be spent on anything else.
