SIR: I found it incredible to read the letter (BEN April 14) that the Planning Committee had approved an application to allow the building at Turton High School to be used as a restaurant. I was pleased to see Cllr Carr's objection was supported by three Liberal Democrat councillors.

The school is "bursting at the seams" and surely the building could be put to good use as, say, a school library or some other function! The school recently increased the staff room by taking over part of the main corridor and so forcing children to go outside the main building as there is no direct way from one end of the building to the other. This, no doubt, due to shortage of space.

Alternatively, it would make sense to demolish the building to extend the car park and relieve the congestion at 3.15pm when coaches/buses and cars mingle with some of the 1,600 pupils causing a dangerous situation when at times the entrance and exits are completely blocked.

Surely it should be used for the benefit of the school.
