SIR: I have been concerned for some time about the sale of the local health clinic situated within the perimeter of Turton High School for the use as a restaurant. It has never made much sense to me that a perfectly good building should be lost to Turton School for present or future use, when my local knowledge tells me that the school is bursting at the seams.
I am aware that feelings have been running high locally regarding the establishment of a restaurant on this site, but having received a copy of the school inspectors report on our excellent school (copies available from the school secretary, note page 22, headed Accommodation) I feel that every effort should be made to try to stop the proposed development going any further.
I believe the first step is for the School Governors to refuse the sale of a portion of local Education Authority land necessary for the development to achieve the planning requirements.
Secondly I feel the Governors should make every effort with the help of the Education Authority, Youth Service, PTA and other bodies, to negotiate and secure this building for the school and possibly youth work in the area.
