TWENTY top players fought it out for the Bolton League's open table tennis title.

The winner was Peer Reich, a major success with Salford Police A this season. He beat Richard Smith of MET in the final, played at the Hilton Centre at Horwich.

League secretary Christine Crumblehulme said: "It was a high quality day. The table tennis was brilliant."

Other results: Open doubles winners: Peer Reich and John Griffiths (MET); Runners-up: Andrew Rushton and Dave Griffiths (Wharton). Veteran over 50s and Veteran over 40s winner: Derek Watmough (Meadow Hill); Runner-up: Brian Doxey (Wharton). Handicap Singles winner: Chris Hibbert (Ladybridge); Runner-up: Derek Watmough.

The Warburton Cup was won by Ladybridge A after they beat Wingates B (plus 7) in the final.

Ladybridge triumphed 5-4 after Chris Hibbert's treble was supported by one each from George Simpson and David Bolton.

Wingates came close thanks to the efforts of Eddie Lee (2), Malcolm Jackson (1) and John Gratton (1).

13-year-old Andrew Rushton of the Wharton Club has been selected to play for England in the Spanish Youth Open in May.

The next Bolton League committee meeting is at 7.30pm tomorrow night at the Hilton Centre.
