SIR: Your news items concerning the formal laying of the foundation stone of the Wanderers new stadium has cast a shadow over this wonderful season.

This great honour was given to a Grey Man, a Yesterday Man, a man who, in a few months time, will be kicked upstairs to the house of Lords and into oblivion. I could never imagine a worse choice.

It needed someone who will be respected by Boltonians and others over the next 100 years. This honour should have been given to Nat Lofthouse. He would have been acceptable to everyone, without exception, not just to a few Tory sycophants.

Could the culprit or culprits responsible for this appalling error of judgement be named?

W Lund, Red Lane, Bolton
