AN elderly woman was found dead in her smoke filled home in Bury by her care worker.
Mary Noble, believed to be in her 80s, was discovered just before 10pm last night.
Two Bury Social Services workers on their way to visit the pensioner were alerted by a smoke alarm.
While one worker raced to call the fire brigade her colleague entered the ground floor flat on Deal Street to find it smoke-logged and the woman lying dead in the kitchen.
Firefighters from the Bury station found that the blaze had burned itself out.
The cause is still being investigated.
The care worker who entered the flat was taken to hospital suffering from shock and the effects of smoke inhalation. She has not been named.
