MORE than a third of all accidents on Bolton's roads involve "hit and run" drivers, figures reveal.
An increasing number of drivers are failing to stop after accidents in a bid to escape convictions for drink driving, driving while disqualified or a range of other offences.
Bolton traffic police chief, Insp Brian Goulding, said driversin an injury accident must report the incident. In damage-only accidents drivers need only exchange insurance details without involving the police.
Police figures reveal that in January, 71 of the 169 accidents on Bolton's roads involved hit-and-run drivers. That is a staggering 42 per cent of all accidents reported that month.
Anyone who suspects a motorist they feel is driving while disqualified or over the drink drive limit is urged to contact the Bolton Police traffic unit, tel: 0161 856 5972.
