Wanderers' relegation fate is now out of their hands after completing their programme with a 3-2 defeat at Stoke last night.
The first half saw Bolton in control with the defence, in which Gudni Bergsson returned after injury, rarely troubled by the home attack.
Bolton took a deserved lead in the 36th minute when a through ball from Greg Strong put Scott Green away on the left. He pulled the ball across for Scott Taylor to score from close range.
Things started to go wrong on the hour. Stephen Jagielka cut through the Wanderers defence without facing a challenge to round Gavin Ward and put the ball into an empty net to equalise.
Six minutes later Stuart Whitehead lost possession and Graham Kavanagh put Stoke ahead.
Substitute Richard Burgess hit City's third goal in the 84th minute before Scott Taylor pulled one back from close range in the 89th minute.
Ward, Bergsson (Davies), Small, Sheridan, Coleman, Strong, Lee (Potter), Whitehead, Green, Taylor, Aljofree (Xiourroupa).
