THE Manchester city region - which includes Bolton - is set to benefit from new trade and tourism links with Japan.

This optimism follows a recent trade mission to Osaka by representatives of Marketing Manchester.

It formed part of the British Tourist Authority's Elegant Britain Mission led by BTA Chairman David Quarmby.

The party included Marketing Manchester Chairman Sir David Trippier and Diane Lomax, Director of Tourism.

Sir David said: "The purpose of our visit was to present the Manchester city region as a key international player in terms of both trade and tourism. We have strong traditional links with Osaka, which is still referred to as "The Manchester of the Orient", and we are heavily involved in organising the major Osaka-Manchester Forum to be held here in September this year."

Manchester has developed a range of close ties and partnerships with Japan including cultural links and partnerships. Economic connections include three new Japanese projects involving about 600 jobs and £58m investment secured by Trafford Park Development Corporation.

Sir David added: "Our mission has provided an excellent framework for the forthcoming Osaka-Manchester Forum which will consist of 50 high level business delegates from the Kansai region of Japan led by Mr Masafumi Ohnishi, Chairman of the Osaka Chamber of Commerce."

The Forum will provide a showcase for businesses across the Manchester city region, focusing on attracting investment, promoting civic understanding, cultural and sporting links and providing the catalyst for further scientific and technological collaboration.
