SIR: I have not suggested that there is no savagery in Britain, neither have I claimed to have attained personal perfection. It is disingenuous of Mr and Mrs A Fenney to say that I have made these statements (Your views, April 19).
These correspondents will have to concede that, by their own definitions, there is still a lot of savagery in poor countries. The present situation in Zaire is just one example. And if they think about the matter further they will note that the people guilty of savagery in this country are often the ones who are claimed to be 'poor'.
I wonder why people such as the Fenneys take such a delight in running down their own country.
