SIR: Last Friday a number of Tory members wrote denying the claims that Mr. Sackville had been a supporter of tipping at Red Moss. Could I go back to the beginning of this saga as I think the writers' memories are very selective.

In the mid 80s and through to the early 90s the Council attempted several times to come out of the GM Waste Authority because of the high cost. This proposal was always implicitly based on tipping on Council owned land at Red Moss for the obvious reason that there was nowhere else it could go. Over those years this scheme was supported by all parties and the local MP Mr Sackville.

Later, however, support began to fall away when the land was declared an SSSI and even more so when the full extent of UK Waste's detailed proposals became known.

But, I repeat for five to six years there was support for tipping at Red Moss by Conservative, Labour and Liberal Democrat councillors assisted in various ways by Mr Sackville.
