THE DIY brigade believe Tony Blair and Paddy Ashdown would be handier with a drill and hammer than John Major.

Householders would trust the Labour or Liberal Democrat leaders most to help them put up shelves according to a tongue-in-cheek poll by a local superstore.

Only 12 percent of customers polled at the new B&Q warehouse at Heap Bridge, Bury believed John Major would be able to put up a shelf.

But, unlike voters in other parts of the country who chose Blair, local customers would prefer the Conservative leader to help them pick their wallpaper and paint. He pipped Blair and Ashdown in the polls when customers were asked who they believed had the best taste in home furnishing and decor.

Most DIYers who expressed a preference said they would be supporting Labour but a quarter of all those polled at the store in the key marginal constituency had yet to make up their mind.
