A FATHER of two is urging council chiefs to put an end to the 'Wacky Races' outside his home after a hit and run driver ploughed into his front garden at the weekend.

Mr Martin Wells returned from a day out with his family to discover the large 60-year-old privet hedge outside his home had been demolished by a runaway car.

Mr Wells is now offering a reward leading to the arrest of the culprits who destroyed the hedge on the corner of Blackburn Road and Darwen Road, Dunscar.

He said: "Neighbours have told me there were five youths in a B-Registration red Metro who lost control and drove through the hedge. They got out of the car, pushed it out of the hedge and drove off.

"I am extremely angry. I can accept that someone may have made a mistake and it is bad enough that they have demolished a privet that must have been up for about 60 years, but to drive off without so much as an apology, to not give a damn, is so very annoying.

"If anyone can provide information that leads to them being charged I will hand over a reward." Mr Wells, who has two young children, aged nine and four years, has lived with his family in the house for about 12 months.

He said: "It is like 'Wacky Races' on the bend outside my home. You can often hear cars screeching past.

"I hate to think what would have happened had my children been playing out in the front garden when the car came crashing through.

"Youngsters also on their way to school pass the house and all it would take is one car to lose control, for it to cause a tragedy.

"We seem to be particularly in the firing line. Cars coming from Darwen seem to take the bend as though it is a chicane.

"A crash barrier at the edge of the road would certainly help make the section much safer. I will be writing to the council to see if that can be done."

Anyone able to help trace the driver and his passengers who crashed through the hedge should contact Bolton Police Station on 0161 872 5050.
