SIR: While I sympathise with Mr J Small who waited in the cold for a ambulance to take him home (April 25), thus putting more strain on NHS resources, we must all realise that ambulances are not a taxi service and need to be available in emergencies to save people's lives.
I have recently been a patient at Royal Bolton Hospital. After treatment I phoned for a taxi and was home in 20 minutes at no great cost.
