SIR: I reply to the article 'Unsafe Taxis' by John Horne.
The Bolton Taxi Drivers Association would like to commend the initiative of Bolton Police, the Department of Transport and the Licensing section of Bolton Council.
It makes a refreshing change that instead of resting on their laurels and counting the amount of revenue generated by the Taxi trade, some action is at last being undertaken to enforce their own directive and by-laws.
The generally accepted view of the Taxi trade is, that out of the 17 hackney carriages tested, many of those were specifically targeted during this campaign, giving a very biased view of the condition of the total fleet.
Members of the public can rest assured that the majority of hackney cabs are maintained to the highest of standards and we are always looking to improve the service that we offer.
