A BONFIRE to burn pornographic material will be built in the Town Hall Square in Bolton on Saturday. Shoppers will be urged to hand over 'blue' magazines and books so that they can be destroyed publicly as a protest against the permissive society. In return, they will be given copies of the Gospels in a modern translation.

AT the annual meeting of Bolton Coal Traders' Association last night, Mr F. Banks, vice-president, said he was tired of hearing the miners praised sky-high. They had not a bad job. The coal man had, and he did not get as much as the miner. The miner's job was no more difficult or arduous than that of the man who delivered the coal. 'They wrap the miner up in cotton wool and give the coal chap a dirty deal', he said.

From the Evening News, May 2, 1872
THE following telegraph was received late on Wednesday night by Sir James Anderson, but the place from which it is sent is illegible:-
'May 1 - The Abydos has returned from Zanzibar. She brings news that Dr Livingstone is safe with Stanley. The news is brought by natives.'
It will be recollected that Stanley is the name of the commissioner sent out by the New York Herald in pursuit of Dr Livingtone.
