AROUND 80,000 businesses started-up during the first three months of 1997 - six pc fewer than for the same quarter in 1996.
Figures from the NatWest Start-Up Index of Small Businesses show that 330,000 new businesses are likely during 1997. The most popular start-up sector is retailing with 20 pc. The production and professional sectors have 16 pc. Fifty-eight pc of business start-ups are sole traders and 87 pc use personal finance to get started. The NOP research also shows that 31 pc of start-ups are blue collar workers and four pc of new business owners were unemployed.
More businesses started up in the East Midlands than any other region.
