SIR: I am astonished that in the 1990s, we still have people who believe that a woman's place is in the home and not at work. I refer to Mrs McAllion's sideswipe at our new MP Ruth Kelly and the birth of her son Eamonn.
If Mrs McAllion had her way this country would be sent crashing back into Dickensian times. I am appalled that a person would really prefer a parliament made up of men, or women who have had no experience of bringing up children.
By giving birth to Eamonn, Ruth will now have a greater understanding of the stresses and strains of motherhood which can only improve her as a Member of Parliament. Already she is fighting to make the House of Commons a much more user friendly place instead of an old relic from days gone by.
However, there are no doubt many people like Mrs McAllion who would much rather Ruth stayed at home and left the country to be run by stuffy old men with no experience of real life - I'm just glad we saw the back of these people on May 1!
