What were the things men used to do
When pretty women they had found?
Like walking on the outside, or
Just spreading cloak on ground.
Or how about the duels fought
For love and Honour dear,
When each man paced it out
And felt that Death was very near?
Or in the bull-ring, oh, so brave,
Against a maddened bull,
Or in the Lists with sword and lance?
Life then was far from dull.
Now time has changed the pattern
Of man's meeting with a maid,
The din that fills the earth today
Puts true love in the shade. By A E Kirkman
