WITH Firwood Fold already well under way, Bolton Town Council is now turning its attention to the town's next proposed conservation area - the 19th century model village of Eagley Bank. Preservation of this collection of cottages and ancient farm buildings has been given top priority. The main stumbling block could be the collection of ancient farm buildings at Eagley Bank, some of them dating back to 1754. These are now in the hands of a developer, and could finish up being bulldozed to make way for modern homes.

THERE were unusual scenes outside Fleetwood station early today, when a crowd of 800 people, some of whom had waited about eight hours, were unable to get aboard the special steamer, Lady of Man, for the Douglas TT races. Special police were drafted in to marshal the crowds which, before the sailing, totalled nearly 4,000. In the hope that a second vessel would be run, hundreds waited on, but they were disappointed. Some enterprising parties brought out primus stoves and cooked their breakfast on the pavement.

JAMES Parr, stonemason, of Howell-croft, was charged at the Borough Court this morning with assaulting his wife, Elicia Parr. The parties were in a beerhouse, when the defendant threw a glass of beer in his wife's face, and then struck here. The complainant stated that her husband earned 30s a week, but since the 24th of April last, he had given her only 34s. She was compelled to go to the mill in order to support herself and children. Two witnesses, named Bridget Crawley and Ann Whitely, were called by the defendant, both of whom reversed the facts of the case, and threw the blame upon the wife. The magistrates fined the defendant 10s and costs for the assault, or 14 days imprisonment in default, and stated it was their opinion that the two female witnesses on behalf of the defendant had deliberately perjured themselves.
