SIR: May I first thank Mr D Sutton Head of Highway and Planning, for the decision to close Greenland Road.
At last the council have agreed that this road is being used as a 'rat run' through the Royal Bolton Hospital and a recent police traffic survey carried out over 48 hours showed that a total of nearly 1,400 passed through ONE WAY from Green Lane and a peak volume of 83 vehicles passed through on Friday, May 16 at 8.00am.
It was also recorded that three vehicles reached speeds of 60 m.p.h. and 12 vehicles 65 m.p.h.. This amount of traffic at these speeds has got to stop for the safety of everyone in this area, especially all the children who attend Mount St Joseph's School.
Considering this survey covered less than two days and only one-way traffic, that means approximately 9,000 vehicles are using this unsuitable road per week.
The sooner it is closed, the better.
The only obstacle now is we may have to wait 12-18 months until the council have the necessary funds. I just hope and pray that no one is killed while we are waiting.
