THE Burnden name will be linked with Bolton Wanderers for ever . . . even after the club moves to the new Reebok Stadium.
An approach has been made by the club to Bolton Council to call the road leading up to the new stadium at Horwich - Burnden Way.
And it will mean that the official address of the new 25,000 all-seater arena will be The Reebok Stadium, Burnden Way. Mr Alan Fullelove, Bolton Wanderers' public relations officer, said: "We wanted the name of Burnden to live on after we leave Burnden Park and I am delighted that the council seems to agree with us."
Cllr Bob Howarth, Bolton Council leader, said: "We are happy to go along with this. The club obviously feels that the name Burnden should still be associated with Bolton Wanderers."
Another historic name associated with Bolton is also set to be honoured with the naming of the M61 link road at Horwich De Havilland Way. It will mean that the road which links the motorway to the Beehive roundabout at Horwich would finally be named - more than 25 years after it was built.
De Havilland was the original name of the British Aerospace works at Lostock, which is now Matra BAe Dynamics.
The name was changed from De Havilland to Hawker Siddeley Dynamics in 1963 before becoming part of the British Aerospace group in 1977. Cllr Howarth, who worked there himself, said: "There is a lot of thought going into naming roads on the Middlebrook development at present and we felt this road should be named.
"I think that by calling it De Havilland Way, we are recognising the fact that thousands of local people have been employed there over the years."
The link road is an A-class road and final approval will have to be given by the new "super" Ministry, which includes the Department of Transport.
