A WOMAN was killed and her husband left battling for his life when the car they were travelling in collided head on with a lorry.
Patricia Costello, 50, a housewife, from Tynesbank in Worsley, had been travelling along the A57 close to Gretna, on the Scottish border, with her husband John when the crash happened.
Mr Costello, who was driving, suffered severe injuries and was rushed to the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle.
His wife died at the scene of the crash.
Their Peugeot 205 collided head on with a lorry on the busy main road at about 6pm on Friday.
The lorry driver suffered minor injuries.
The road was closed by police for several hours after the accident.
