A CONTROLLED explosion was carried out on a suspect device outside the business of Chorley's Referendum Party candidate at the General Election.
A bomb disposal unit was called in from Liverpool when the pipe-shaped device was found under a van next to North Shipping, Ward Street, Lostock Hall, run by Colin Heaton.
Forensic experts have been examining the device discovered in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Mr Heaton, of Sandy Lane, Brindle, said: "About twenty five years ago I worked for a firm on Preston docks and we were told by police we were on an IRA bombing list. I don't think this is connected but it's still a matter of concern."
Firefighters found the device under the back wheel of a red Ford Escort van.
DI Keith Parker, of Leyland Police, said: "It's not thought there's any terrorist activity connected to the incident and inquiries are being made locally."
