A CARING cancer surgeon from Chorley has received royal recognition for his charity work.
Reginald Kingston of Sutton Lane, Adlington, was awarded the OBE in the Queen's birthday honours list.
He was told last month that his endeavours for the Macmillan Cancer Relief Fund had earned him royal recognition.
Mr Kingston, 58, was "delighted" with the "totally unexpected" news and was excited about going down to Buckingham Palace to meet the Queen.
He spends his time working at Trafford Hospital in Manchester, as a bowel surgeon and developed a clinical research department at the hospital.
He has helped raise more than £m for the fund which provides nurses to give specialist care for people who are terminally ill. Some money also goes to cancer research.
Mr Kingston graduated from Liverpool University in 1964 and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons.
A modest Mr Kingston paid tribute to other people at Trafford Hospital. He said: "I would like to thank the people in the department who work with me, and all the hospital staff. We are a relatively small hospital and we all work well as a team."
