SOCIAL services chiefs have been given an official pat on the back after a top-level inspection.

Bolton was one of eight authorities tested for its services for the elderly ethnic minorities.

And councillors were told at an adult services sub-committee meeting that it came out on top.

The two-week inspection by the Social Services Inspectorate took place in March.

The council was praised for the way it delivered services in minority communities - despite language and cultural differences. In addition, many elderly members of the minority communities are unable to read.

The council was particularly commended for its "elder abuse" policy for all pensioners in Bolton.

The inspectors were also impressed with the consultation with people over the conversion of the Lilian Hamer home on Deane Road into a community care centre.
