BOLTON School and Bury Grammar School should throw their sports facilities open to the public and state-educated youngsters, MP David Chaytor has said.

He told a Commons debate that the government should encourage independent schools to allow wider use of their normally top class playing fields and indoor halls.

The Bury North Labour MP said it was vital to get more teachers back into using their after-school time to supervise sporting and other extra-curricular activities.

And he added that attacks on the profession should cease and more should be done to encourage and assist teachers.

As well as the vital task of getting the young interested in sport which could boost their health and fitness for the rest of their lives, Mr Chaytor said a drive to get the over-60s involved in sport was also needed.
