SIR: After the recent national car free day, I see there have been complaints through your column about the rise in town centre car parking fees. I say treble them. Anything that reduces the amount of traffic has got to be a good thing!
While accepting it is still the age of the car, it is estimated 25 per cent of car journeys undertaken are two miles or less. With concerns of environmental issues again in the news. One has to say enough is enough.
Our attitudes to the environment must change. More emphasis on public transport, the electric tram, (Metrolink being an example) encouraging healthier activities like cycling and walking must be advocated for a cleaner healthier and safer environment. Are we as a nation really serious about these things?
I suggest those people complaining of car parking fees take an alternative mode of transport. No not the bus. And if in a reasonable state of health do what I and others do, cycle or walk! While accepting this isn't possible for everyone. There is a majority out there, who for some reason, convenience being one of them, just can't be bothered.
