SIR: I refer to Rivington and Lever Park. Thankfully the people administering the Millennium Fund had the good sense not to back NWW's plans for Rivington and Lever Park.

Most people I have met and spoken to are against the plans.

Most people are against: the exploitation of an area of outstanding beauty; commercialisation by building restaurants, craft workshops, building and extending car parks especially the ones by the two honey pot barns; environmental damage; extending existing and building new car parks on green field sites; greater pollution and damage the increase in vehicular traffic will bring due to the commercialisation of the area; spoiling the character of Rivington by their proposed alterations and the use of listed buildings - mainly the Top Barn and Hall

The park and ride scheme will only operate on Sundays and Bank Holidays. This is part of the scheme that has not been thought out and will not be able to cope with the number of projected visitors to the area.

Great play was made that it would bring 40 much needed jobs to the area. If you look at NWW's Master Plan a large proportion are for volunteers.

However, supporters of the plan will be pleased to know those who oppose the plans (99.9 per cent of general public) will be saddened. On June 16, 1997, Chorley Council planning committee rubber stamped the NWW planning application for Rivington. If these plans are approved at the next full Council meeting, this will allow NWW to carry out their plans.
