COLIN Todd was hoping to clinch a Wanderers record transfer deal for Newcastle's Robbie Elliott.

The Bolton boss was in negotiations with St James' Park officials today about a £2.5m deal that would make Elliott the most expensive signing in Wanderers' history.

Newcastle have used Elliott in a versatile role and he responded last season with seven goals in 17 games to help the Magpies into second place in the Premiership and qualification into the Champions League.

Todd, however, will let the player assume his true position of full back earmarking him for the left-back spot at the Reebok Stadium.

That wasn't the only transfer talk concerning Wanderers.

Speculation has linked Wanderers in a £1.5m deal for Bury central defender Chris Lucketti, while the search is still on for a striker.

But Todd was today concentrating on the move for Elliott, which following the signing of right back Neil Cox from Middlesbrough, would provide the side with a new-look defensive line-up.
