THE handover of Hong Kong was not the only historic moment yesterday afternoon. Less than one hour later, Lancashire won a Championship match.
Their first victory of the season, by three wickets over Worcestershire, could prove a significant turning point. And just as important, it saw the emergence of a new young star in Andrew Flintoff.
England coach David Lloyd has been raving about Flintoff's ability since he starred as a 17-year-old on an under-19 tour of the West Indies two years ago. And on only his second Championship appearance, the tall Preston youngster showed what all the fuss about.
Now the England under-19 captain, Flintoff, steered Lancashire from the jaws of a fourth consecutive defeat at 64 for five to a dramatic win with a classy 70, his maiden first class half century.
And Warren Hegg, Lancashire's other hero with an unbeaten 54, believes Flintoff can now help the county climb the table.
"I really think we can go from strength to strength," said Hegg, who shared a seventh wicket partnership of 98 with Flintoff.
"It is a burden when you're looking for that first Championship win and a relief now we've got it."
