This afternoon the rate against the dollar was more than two cents down from the overnight level of 2.44125 dollars. This is a devaluation of more than six per cent against the old middle parity of 2.6057 dollars. It was also down against major European currencies.

PASSENGERS on the early morning buses to town provide an interesting study during holiday week. Those of us who board the usual bus at or near the outer terminus, notice the absence of the 'regulars' who, we rightly assume, are on holiday, but soon their places are filled by others off for a day's excursion, and long before the town centre is reached the conduction is 'ringing through' with a full load.

But there are others like ourselves who are not on holiday. They are the pupils of grammar schools who are spending this week or part of it sitting for 'school cert'. It is something that must be endured under the present examination system, and we can only offer our sympathy.

AT the Borough Court this morning, William Watson, a saddler, was brought up on a charge of assaulting and stabbing Thomas Catherall. Prosecutor stated that he was going home along Folds-road on Saturday night, when he saw prisoner and another man fighting. A woman got hold of the defendant and asked prosecutor to take the prisoner home, which he did. Prosecutor was very unwilling to state the facts of the case, and it was not until Mr Winder (the magistrates' clerk) told him that the Bench would have to commit him if he did not tell the whole of the circumstances that he gave a full account of the affair. He then stated that after he had taken the prisoner home, the prisoner wanted to go out of the house again, and prosecutor advised him to remain in the house, and fetched him a quart of ale. Prisoner then said that prosecutor was courting his (prisoner's) mistress, and began to curse and knocked his wife down. Prisoner then pulled a large clasp knife out of his pocket and ran prosecutor out of the house, cutting the prosecutor's hand. Prosecutor said that several persons witnessed the assault, and the case was remanded until Thursday in order that they might appear against the prisoner.
