LEISURE chiefs are out to catch 'em young in Chorley.
Under a new initiative, young anglers are being netted for free Tuesday evening sessions throughout July.
They are taking place at Yarrow Valley Park, Birkacre, where youngsters will get the opportunity to learn the practical skills of fishing.
Organised by Wigan and District Anglers' Association, there will be tips on offer for those new to the sport and others who may have been involved for some time.
Association secretary Gerry Wilson said: "Many young people are attracted to fishing but can be put off because they don't know where to seek the correct kind of advice.
"Angling can become a life time hobby and we want to make sure that would-be young fishermen in Chorley get off to the right kind of start."
Coun Terry Brown, the council's community services committee chairman and a keen angler himself, said: "Fishing properly is not just about knowing which hook or bait to use.
"There is also a need to know about the countryside and wildlife in general. We want young anglers to enjoy their pastime, but we also want them to be aware of their surroundings and how they must act.
"That involves everything from taking litter home to ensuring that broken lines and old hooks are not left lying around.
"I am sure the free sessions will be a big success and get Chorley's younger fishermen off to a great start."
Those interested should meet at Yarrow Valley Park between 5.15pm and 5.30pm on Tuesdays. The sessions will take place from 6pm-8pm.
