NORTH WEST Water and the Red Rose Forest conservationist initiative have teamed up to plan woodlands in and around Bolton.
The water company has funded a £25,000 community liaison manager's post for the Red Rose Forest.
The new recruit, Jane Whittaker, will work with local groups and individuals to improve the environment.
The Red Rose Forest, one of 12 Community Forests across the country, stretches from Ramsbottom to Altrincham.
The scheme also has the backing of the local authority.
Cllr Gerald Riley said: "Tree planting just isn't taken seriously enough as only three per cent of Bolton is wooded, but with Red Rose Forest that number is gradually increasing.
"North West water's new partnership with Red Rose Forest is a welcome commitment that will greatly benefit the people of Bolton."
The Community Forest initiative was developed by the Countryside Commission and the Forestry Commission to create a mixture of woods, farmland and open spaces for recreation, wildlife and education in and around major towns and cities.
