A GROUP of Bolton businessmen are the driving force behind an ambitious scheme to transform an MOT testing station into a wine bar and private members' nightclub.

The three men have applied to Bolton's planning committee to convert the testing station on Breightmet Street, close to the town centre.

They believe that if the scheme gets the green light it will help to rejuvenate the area and may attract other businesses.

One of the three partners behind the venture, Mr Alan Ackers, says the exclusive wine bar and private club, which could create 20 new jobs, will be aimed at the over 25s and would hope to attract corporate business.

He said: "We believe there is a market out there for this age group and we feel we would help to revitalise this particular area of Bolton."

The team has been in discussion with Bolton's town centre manager Maria Appleton who is keen to encourage more visitors to Bolton during the evening.

The wine bar aspect of the development would have a Victorian theme. It would be be based on a courtyard complete with mock shop fronts, York flagstones and lamp posts.

It would also be on one level and provide access for people with disabilities.

The three businessmen, Alan Ackers, Graham Griffiths and Gary Leaver, also plan to lay on a mini-bus for customers to collect them from the town centre to take them to the venue.

They also hope to attract business in the daytime with a varied menu.

Mr Ackers added: "A lot of work has already been done. We feel we would be offering something not currently available in Bolton."
