SIR: Well done Bolton Council. It's taken some time, but at last they are going to reduce speed limits in certain built up areas (BEN, February 13).
In 300 places, where 20 mph zones have been introduced, along with traffic calming measures, pedestrian casualties have been reduced by 61 per cent; child pedestrians and child cyclists by 67 per cent.
With statistics like these, you know it makes sense.
Surely now we should be reducing the limits on all roads, including motorways, at least for a long trial period. If the carnage on our roads is reduced by a fraction of the above statistics, as a result, then we know we are heading in the right direction.
To quote the words most people know but few heed: "Better to arrive late, than dead on time".
