POLICE are hunting thieves who broke into a Post Office by smashing their way through the floor of the flat above.
The gang struck at Hillock Sub Post Office on Albert Place in Prestwich between 6.15pm last night and 6am today.
Armed with some kind of pneumatic tool, they cut a hole in the floor of the upstairs flat, and dropped down through the ceiling of the post office. They then cut the door off the safe and stole a large quantity of cash.
Police were at the scene this morning and Det Sgt Mark Bell said: "Obviously the burglars must have made a lot of noise as they broke into the post office, and we are appealing for anyone who may have heard or seen anything to contact us."
Post office customers are asked to use alternative premises at Park Lane, Rufford Drive and Whitefield for the next couple of days.
Anyone with any information should contact Bury Police on 0161 856 8157 or Crimestoppers free and in confidence in 0800 555111.
