BOLTON Wanderers' No.1 fan is the town's first citizen. And the message from the Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Peter Birch, for his team facing one of the toughest tests of their footballing lives on Saturday is simple:"Come on, lads . . . you can do it!" Cllr Birch, ward councillor for Burnden, is a longtime supporter of the Super Whites and attends matches at the Reebok Stadium as often as his civic duties will allow.
He'll be there on Saturday, though, in the directors' box, to watch the team in their important clash with Sheffield Wednesday. And he's positive they can win.
"They're a quality side but they've had a bit of bad luck recently," he explained. "They've worked hard, the fans have supported them well, and they deserve to stay in the Premiership.
"They just need to be positive, and play like we all know they can do."
Cllr Birch will certainly be hoping that Colin Todd includes his favourite Wanderer, Arnar Gunnlaugsson in the team for this crucial match: "He's excellent - fast and talented.
"I'll certainly be shouting for the lads on Saturday. And I'll probably be shouting AT the referee if things don't go well!" he joked.
